Amsterdam, Netherlands, May 23rd, 2022 | The Global Network of Young People Living with HIV (Y+ Global) launched the ethical engagement guidelines to help youth-led and youth-serving organisations, governments, donors, non-governmental organisations, and international agencies work better with young people living with HIV in the HIV response.
Globally, 4 million young people are living with HIV, and two out of seven new HIV infections in 2019 were among young people. Therefore, young people’s engagement as advocates, researchers, service providers and peer educators is crucial.
To contribute to the voices, Y+ Global brought together a diverse group of young people, including those living with HIV, adolescent girls and young women, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex and queer, those who use drugs, young people selling sex, and young people with disabilities from around the world, who offered advice and recommendations on the issues that matter most to them.
ViiV Healthcare Positive Action supported the development of this vital resource.
The guidelines will encourage organisations to reflect on their work with young people living with HIV and provide clear, specific, and practical suggestions and recommendations, based on our experience.ViiV Healthcare Positive Action is proud to support and collaborate with many youth-led organisations, and fully support the principle of ‘nothing for us, without us’. Nothing embodies this more than the development of the ethical engagement guidelines produced by Y+Global. We are very excited to see this rolled out as it highlights the importance of meaningfully and ethically engaging young people living with HIV in the HIV response globally”.Jenny Cozins
Director of Strategic Partnerships, ViiV Healthcare Positive Action
The guideline presents the practices we want to see and the processes that must be in place to ensure the work with young people living with HIV is ethical and meaningful, with a purpose and tangible results. The ethical guideline is a voice of young people in all our diversity. I encourage all organisations, governments, or donor agencies that work to enhance the uptake of HIV services for young people living with HIV to adopt the ethical engagement guideline. It explains young people's experiences and how we wish to be engaged.”Tinashe Rufurwadzo
