Gender Equality Fund Nigeria Country Profile

In 2022, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) faced a disproportionate HIV burden, with 4,000 new infections weekly worldwide—3,100 from sub-Saharan Africa alone. AGYW are three times more likely to acquire HIV than male peers. In Nigeria, HIV prevalence is 1.3% among adults, higher in women (1.8%) than men (1%), with significant regional variations. While adult treatment coverage is high (96%), children remain underserved (20%). Nigeria also battles major TB and malaria challenges, recording one of the largest TB diagnosis gaps globally and the highest global malaria burden, with 27% of cases and 31% of deaths. Stigma, low awareness, and health system barriers continue to impact youth. This profile draws on policy reviews and focus group discussions to inform solutions.
